An older piece, but one that turned out pretty well. One of the few pieces that is watercolour on cold press paper.

I really like it when someone's done a non-movie inspired work, and it's still beautifully accurate and detailed... this is just wonderful.

Oh wow! I love the contrast between the deep shadows and the bright fire and light. And I like that you depict the Balrog with a discernible face and not just as limbed blob of fire. Sure, I'd run from a blob of fire, but I'd be much more afraid to stand against something winged and massive and obviously cunning. This makes Gandalf's stand seem even more heroic. Excellent!

Thanks! I prefer seeing all sorts of stonework instead of that grim cave look for Moria.

And that's an awesome idea, because most of works about Moria has the grim, dark and cold look.

I like the armor, gives a better sense of the Balrogs as soldiers, not just beasts.

Soldiers and Commanders! I believe Gothmog commanded all of Morgoth's armies, so much more intelligent than usually protrayed.

I love the landscape. I can't remember what the book said about it because I read it 12 years ago, but this is a better concept than the movie's

Thanks. You figure for a race that lives underground, they would do a hell of a lot more stonework than was portrayed in the movie.

The water color in this is beautifully done. The clear edges make it striking and the detail work on the stones lends a wonderful realism to it. Please do more like this!

It's not the dramatic moment that catch my interest - but all the detailwork below the bridge and edges.

Lovely! The shadows are just awesome...

Thanks for noticing. I had done a much more spare version as a preliminary and had been fortunate enough to show my work to Mike Kaluta( whose done some marvelous LOTR pieces himself) and he had first brought up the fact that the dwarves would have done a lot of stone sculpting. That's where all that stuff comes from. He's still right, as far as I'm concerned. The dwarves of Moria lived there for several thousand years, the place should crawling with stone craftsmenship.

A little confusing, the image fades into background, also I fell a lack of contrast in the whole image, but it's still an impressive piece!
