Really, when your depiction of Middle-Earth is EVEN BETTER than the Films, you've done something VERY right; I must say that I particularly appreciate how you've depicted certain lords, knights and captains in colours non-green so that the scene seems to 'Pop' that much more!

Rhorrics did not wear plate armour. The only ones with plate armour in the West were Gondorians, and it was a drab affair. That being said it is a beautiful piece, interpretation aside.

Does Tolkien ever mention the Gondorians wearing plate?

Indeed, he did. They wore plain steel plate armor. I can't quote the books directly on it but they had the metallurgy skill to do so. It wasn't elaborate or pretty like the Rhunites though.

They may have in theory had the metallurgy skill, but the only reference to anything resembling plate I know of is the vambraces of Prince Imrahil.

"Ride to ruin and the world's ending!"
Magnificent depiction of Theoden ordering his household company to advance and begin the great charge across the Pelennor. There is something of an N.C. Wyeth feeling about this scene. You managed to make it possible for Theoden and his knights to wear plate armor without looking out of place!

This is just stunning! The detail is incredible, as are the colours and postures. And of course, bonus points for drawing one's own vision rather than the movie stuff, gorgeous though it was.

The ram helm made me giggle though... I would never have thought of that! :D

I give a lot of praise to nineteenth century war painters for the success of this piece. Take a look at 'Friedland' by Meissonier. One of my favorite paintings.

Rohan was inspired on Anglo-Saxons, Ostrogoths, and Visigoths, all mounted Germanic cultures. Meanwhile, Gondor was inspired on Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. Now, I have Portuguese (through both my father's maternal family and my mother's paternal family), Spanish (my father's paternal family) and German (my mother's maternal family) ancestry. Since all the three families (from which comes my Portuguese and Spanish ancestries) have Roman names, here is my LotR ID: My name is Brannon Lyfgast. I was born on Mina's Tirith the capital of Gondor. My father is a Gondorian like me, but my mother is a Rohirrim from the Westfold. I am proud of both my ancestries.

and here I thought your caps lock was broken! I'm glad you liked the piece. I'm too close to my own pieces to be completely satisfied. That's what motivates the next one. This one's not bad, though.
